I’m an experienced Assistant Principal, literacy advocate, and passionate believer in the power of student voice. For close to two decades, I’ve worked alongside students, teachers, and school leaders to create learning environments where literacy is not just an academic exercise—but a meaningful form of self-expression and leadership.
Why I Started This Blog
A few years ago, when I was teaching 7th grade Reading, a quiet student “wowed” her class, and me when she turned in a personal narrative that brought tears to this teacher’s eyes. She had never spoken up in class—but her writing revealed courage, clarity, and deep insight. She chose to write about her experience as a caretaker for her younger siblings. In that moment, and countless more after, I reminded that when we make space for authentic reading, writing. and speaking opportunities for students, we give them a voice they may not yet know they have.
This blog is a space for educators who want to lead with purpose and use authentic literacy tasks and activities as a catalyst for empowering students. Whether you’re a new teacher, experienced educator, instructional coach, or school leader, you’ll find practical tools here to:
- Strengthen writing instruction across content areas
- Build student-centered learning communities of practice
- Develop teacher capacity through coaching and collaboration
- Center equity and relevance in literacy practices
What I Bring
Across my roles as a classroom teacher, instructional coach, and educational leader, I’ve led initiatives such as:
- Implementing school-wide authentic literacy task and activities using the existing district and school curriculum and frameworks.
- Facilitating grade-level PD that integrates project-based learning with literacy goals
- Launching student-led conferences and reflection-based writing tasks that elevate student voice
- Supporting teacher growth plans that embed culturally responsive literacy strategies
Each strategy is grounded in research and shaped by real classroom needs.
